Real-estate developers behind Hyderabad Riots : Fact-Finding Team
Top Stories
Thursday, 22 April 2010

Sreenivas Janyala Posted online: Thursday , Apr 22, 2010 at 0820 hrs
Hyderabad : A fact-finding team comprising members of five city-based organisations has concluded that the March riots in Hyderabad began as a tiff between two communities but were turned into a full-scale riot by the real estate mafia to grab prime real estate. Attacks on religious places, houses and shops were pre-planned in order to scare residents away so their properties could be taken over, the committee said.

The team found that religious places were attacked and demolished by the real estate mafia between March 23 and 27.

“What started off as a tiff between the two communities over celebration of festivals was turned into a full-scale riot by real estate mafia. For the first time in the history of Hyderabad a number of religious places have been attacked and demolished and the real estate mafia is behind this. There is evidence that the mobs who carried out these attacks did not belong to Hyderabad, their language and appearance was also different. Even the stones that were used to pelt at religious places and houses were brought from outside,” Lateef Mohammed Khan, Secretary of Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee (CLMC), says.

Besides CLMC, members of Kula Nirmoolana Porata Samiti, Patriotic Democratic Movement, Chaitanya Samaikhya and Viplava Rachayitula Sangam were part of the fact-finding team which visited all the affected areas.

“At least 36 mosques and 3 temples were attacked and property including houses, shops, and hotels were burnt or damaged,” Khan said. Two persons died due to stabbing, another died in stone-pelting, while 97 persons were injured. The hand of municipal councillors of BJP, MIM and TDP is being suspected.

The trouble started in the Madannapet, a mixed community area on the evening of March 23. Muslims had tied flags on two sides of the road on the occasion of Eid Milad un Nabi and these were not removed till one month after the festival. On Ramanavami, the Hindus residing in the area wanted to tie their own flags, leading up to the disturbance.

The elders of the Muslim community asked to be given some time to remove the flags, but the local BJP Municipal Councillor Sahadev Yadav provoked the youth to tie the saffron flags by removing the green flags,” the team’s report says.

Late, a mob began pelting stones in the area. Officials say it is difficult to pinpoint who they were since they pelted stones both at Hindus and Muslims.

The team noted that the ‘outsiders’ who came in buses spread out and were constantly in touch with someone over mobile phone and were being directed to specific places and areas. The role of TDP municipal councillor from Mangalghat, Raju Singh is being suspected.

Sania-Shoiab face fresh trouble, this time from a Muslim NGO
Hyderabad News
Thursday, 22 April 2010

A day after getting back his passport, Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and his wife http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/HTEditImages/Images/sania-shoaib-wedding.jpgIndian tennis star Sania Mirza Wednesday faced fresh trouble with a city court asking police to look into the complaint that they hurt religious sentiments of Muslims.

A Muslim organisation has complained that Shoaib, Sania, Shoaib's fist wife Ayesha Siddiqui and 11 others hurt the sentiments of Muslims on the issue of divorce.

The IIIrd additional chief metropolitan magistrate referred the complaint to Banjara Hills police station for investigation and directed the police to submit the report by May 26.

Moullim Mohsin Bin Hussain Al-Kasary, president of Mazlumeen-e-Ummatay Mohammediya organisation, has also named former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin, Sania's father Imran Mirza and two 'Qazis' in his complaint.

He said these persons hurt the religious sentiments on the issue of Shoaib's divorce to Ayesha. He pointed out that the Pakistani cricketer did not officially divorce Ayesha.

"Shoaib had initially claimed that he did not marry Ayesha but later sent divorce papers to her under a compromise reached with the help of other accused. There was no official divorce, but the accused declared that divorce proceedings are over, thus insulting religious feelings of Muslims," Al-Kasary alleged.

The complainant said two 'Qazis', appointed by the government, misused their official position and played with the sentiments of Muslims through registered divorce. He also pointed out that the divorce papers carried false name of Shoaib's father.

The complainant argued that the acts of the accused constitute an offence under section 295 (A) of the Indian Penal Code.

If the police register a case against Shoaib and Sania, this could further delay their departure to Pakistan to attend 'valima' reception to be hosted by Shoaib later this week.

Shoaib, whose passport was seized by police April 5 after his first wife filed a cheating case, got the travel document back Tuesday following an order by the high court.

Ayesha withdrew her complaint against Shoaib after he divorced her April 7 under an agreement reached with the help of Sania's family members and some community elders.

The former Pakistani skipper married Sania April 12.

MIM backs Status Quo, Opposes Telanagana and UT status for Hyderabad
Hyderabad News
Thursday, 22 April 2010

Hyderabad: Ending its silence over the Telangana issue, the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) on Sunday opposed the demand for union territory status to Hyderabad and suggested that if the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh becomes inevitable, a Greater Telangana state comprising Telangana and Rayalseema regions be formed.

MIM, a key political force in Hyderabad, said it was basically for continuing the present status of Andhra Pradesh with constitutional guarantees to Telangana.

"However, if the division becomes inevitable, Greater Telangana state should be formed with Hyderabad as the capital," the party said.

The party has expressed its views on the issue in a memorandum submitted to the Srikrishna committee, which is looking into the demands for and against a separate Telangana state.

MIM, which had suggested union territory status to Hyderabad a couple of years ago, now opposed the demand coming from some leaders of Andhra, Rayalaseema and even Hyderabad.

The party told the five-member panel formed by the central government that Hyderabad is an integral part of Telangana and its resources could be utilised for Telangana state or Greater Telangana state in the event of Andhra Pradesh's bifurcation.

MIM president and MP from Hyderabad, Asaduddin Owaisi pointed out that Hyderabad had been a part of Telangana for centuries and they can never be separated.

MIM wants merger of Rayalaseema with Telangana to form Greater Telangana state on the ground that both are backward regions. The demand is significant in view of the party's presence in some Muslim-majority parts of Rayalaseema. Some Congress leaders from Rayalaseema had already mooted a similar proposal.

Telangana comprises 10 districts, including Hyderabad, while Rayalaseema bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has four districts. Coastal Andhra, the third region, comprises nine districts.

MIM has also demanded special measures to protect the interests of Muslims in the event of Andhra Pradesh's division. It also wanted status of second official language to Urdu in both the proposed states.

The party, which has one Lok Sabha member and seven state legislators from Hyderabad, also sought protection of non-Telangana people living in Hyderabad.

MIM had remained silent ever since the Telangana movement picked up momentum late last year. It did not voice its opinion even after Home Minister P Chidambaram announced in December that the process for formation of Telangana state would be initiated.

The party, however, took part in an all-party meeting called by Chidambaram to discuss the issue on January 5 after his announcement evoked sharp reaction in the two other regions.

In February, a committee headed by Justice Srikrishna was formed to look into the Telangana issue. The committee, which has so far received over 60,000 representations from all three regions of the state, is currently holding consultations with political parties.

The central government has asked the committee to submit its report by the end of the year.

No house for Hyderabad collector
Hyderabad News
Thursday, 22 April 2010

HYDERABAD: He may have become collector of the most important district in the state, but being confined to living in a small room in a government guest house is not what he bargained for. Landing in Hyderabad to take over as district collector on April 9, IAS officer Natarajan Gulzar realized to his dismay that his predecessor Navin Mittal has not vacated the official residential premises on Road No 12, Banjara Hills. And adding insult to injury, has taken steps to fortify himself in the same place.

Apart from substituting the name plate ‘Navin Mittal, Hyderabad collector’ with ‘Navin Mittal, IAS,’ outside the residence, the 1996 batch officer has still not given up his official car and has also retained an attendant attached to the collectorate. “I am doubling up as the dafedar (attendant) for most part of the day,” Gulzar told a senior colleague at the secretariat.

Mittal’s job was made easier due to the fact that his new office as special commissioner in the GHMC is only about 2 kms from the Hyderabad collectorate office on Nampally station road. Gulzar, meanwhile, packed his bags from Vizag where he was posted as MD of Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (EPDCL) and arrived in city with his family. Having no official accommodation, he has sent away his wife and two daughters to his parent’s house in Thiruvananthapuram.

The building on Road No 12, Banjara Hills has been functioning as the Hyderabad collector’s official residence-cum-camp office for the past 20 years. “Unlike other IAS postings, the collector will have to function from this premises as it also doubles up as the camp office where he meets the public as well as VIPs on various issues,” said an official.
