Why can't Indian Missiles be given a name like 'Tipu Sultan'? : Owaisi
Wednesday, 21 July 2010

OwaisiWhy are missiles given only Hindu names? Agni, Prithvi, Nag and Akash, or the futuristic air-to-air missile christened Astra — these are all borrowed from Hindu mythology. At a parliamentary standing committee meeting, Majlis-e-Itthehad-ul-Muslimeen MP Asaduddin Owaisi raised the question. What Owaisi wanted to know was why no other names are considered. He wanted to know why a name like Tipu Sultan could not be considered. All that a DRDO official had to offer was that the christening of missiles was done by none other than A P J Abdul Kalam.

Interestingly, whether it is Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha, Andhra Pradesh rules the roost. The Muslim Members of Parliament from the South India state lead others from the community when it comes to performance on the floor of the House. While Asaduddin Owaisi has led Lok Sabha, Mohammad Ali Khan from the state is top scorer in the Rajya Sabha during the Budget Session 2010 that ran from 22 February to 07 May.

In the 32-day-long session, 61-year-old Mohammad Ali Khan asked 90 questions, just 10 short of 100 – the mark Owaisi, Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad, crossed in the same session on the floor of the Lower House.
