A foreign threat in Chanchalguda jail too! |
|
Friday, 06 August 2010 |
|
HYDERABAD: With as many as 40 foreigners confined within its
four walls, the the Chanchalguda jail in Hyderabad has got an `international
feel' but Indian inmates are not feeling safe anymore.
Remand prisoners, especially those from African countries, are the worst of the
lot as they resort to violence attacking other inmates. "They are a menace. We
have had instances of them getting into fights with other prisoners. Whenever we
sense that the remand prisoners from African countries are in a belligerent
mood, we post more guards to prevent any outbreak of violence," said
Chanchalguda jail superintendent Chandrasekhar.
Sources said that in some instances, the jail staff have to physically deal with
them and forcibly put them in solitary confinement.
Apart from remand prisoners from African countries, especially Nigeria, the
Chanchalguda jail is home to undertrials belonging to Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Japan
and European countries. The alleged crime that landed them in prison could be
overstaying, include dealing in drugs, committing frauds and terror activities.
Almost all the Sri Lanka prisoners are fishermen who strayed into Indian waters
and have been lodged here. The Chanchalguda jail in Hyderabad has been
designated as a place where foreigners have to be lodged irrespective of where
they allegedly committed a crime in the state.
The remand prisoners from other countries apart from having a problem with local
prisoners sometimes have a major problem with the food served in the jail.
Since the same provisions of the jail manual apply for foreign prisoners, they
cannot be expected to get any special treatment. "Sometimes they angrily throw
away their plates," a jail source said. Prison authorities, however, said that
based on a recommendation of a jail doctor, the foreign prisoners are given
bread.
The frustration of some of the foreign prisoners is also said to be because they
have nobody to help them get out of prison. The jail authorities write to the
embassies of the countries of the foreign prisoners to take up their case. "Some
respond, some do not. Such prisoners get legal help as they are entitled to and
given by the government," Chanchalguda jail superintendent Chandrasekhar said.
At the Charlapally Central Prison too, there are three foreigners spending their
time as convicts. These include a Pakistani and two Nigerians. The Pakistani
prisoner is undergoing a 14-year prison term in a terror-related crime.
Even at the Charlapally jail, the Nigerian convicts have reportedly become a
`law and order' problem for the jail staff. Since the huge prison has more
accommodation, whenever they posed a problem, they are segregated and isolated.
It may be mentioned here that Nigerian nationals caught in the city were
involved in financial frauds and cheating apart from peddling drugs. Two days
ago, a Nigerian, Okechukwu Ohazuruke was arrested by the city police for selling
cocaine.

Three Die of Swine Flu, over 15 hospitalised |
|
Friday, 06 August 2010 |
|
HYDERABAD: The dreaded swine flu has raised its ugly head
again. It has claimed three lives in the State in the past 24 hours and resulted
in the hospitalisation of over 15 persons including 15 nursing students.
Of the three victims, two died at the Gandhi Hospital and another fell victim to
the virus at the Government Chest Hospital. Official sources said one of the
victims, a 28-year-old from Narsingapeta in Atmakur S Mandal of Nalgonda
district had been suffering from swine flu for the past few days. He was
referred to the Government Chest Hospital in Erragadda where he breathed his
last late on Wednesday night.
Of the two, who succumbed to the virus at the Gandhi Hospital, one was a
65yearold from Raghavapuram in Mothe mandal of Nalgonda district. The other was
from Jammikunta in Karimnagar district. Both of them died on Thursday.
Even as the swine full toll rises, 15 nursing students of the Gandhi Hospital
exhibited symptoms of the virus and were immediately admitted to the hospital
this morning. All the girls reportedly share the same room. Doctors said the
girls had been kept in isolation wards and their nasal swabs sent for testing.
Meanwhile, four others, including a 23yearold woman from Tirupati and a
threeyearold boy from Tipparti in Nalgonda district were hospitalised after they
contracted the deadly virus.
While the woman from Tirupati who delivered a baby recently was shifted to the
Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital at Vellore in Tamil Nadu, the
threeyearold from Nalgonda is undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital.
Doctors said two others from Nalgonda had also tested positive for swine flu.
The spurt in swine flu cases is being attributed to the rainy season.

L&T bags Rs 12000 crore Hyderabad metro project |
|
Friday, 06 August 2010 |
|
Hyderabad : More than a year after the state government
scrapped the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project awarded to Maytas Infra, the
government today decided to award the Rs 12,132 crore project to Larsen and
Toubro Limited.
L&T had emerged as the lowest bidder after fresh bids were called for early this
year.
The state Cabinet approved the recommendations of a three-member committee to
award the project to L&T that has emerged as the lowest bidder.
L&T has sought Rs 1,458 crore as Viability Gap Funding for the project. The VGF
amount would be released by the Government of India while the Andhra Pradesh
government would spend Rs 1,980 crore towards the acquisition of 204 acres of
land at two places in Hyderabad as well as relief and rehabilitation of the
affected
people.
The state government would release Rs 500 crore as the first instalment in the
current financial year, said Minister for Information J Geeta Reddy.
L&T would form a special purpose vehicle and enter into a concession agreement
with the state government within a month of the Letter of Award.
It would have to provide bank guarantee for Rs 360 crore as performance security
and achieve financial closure in six months, the Minister said.
Ground works for the project were scheduled to commence in January 2011, she
added.
The project would be completed in five years, covering three high-density
traffic corridors over a 70-km route.
Last July, the Government scrapped the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project after Maytas
Infra failed to achieve financial closure.
A consortium led by Maytas Infra which was awarded the contract was unable to
start the project for various reasons.

Hyderabad school principal allegedly abused many girl students |
|
Saturday, 24 July 2010 |
Mohammed Salahuddin Ayub
Hyderabad: Mohammed Salahuddin Ayub, director and principal of
Parkwood International School, had sexually abused more than one girl
student, according to Central Crime Station (CCS) sleuths investigating
one of the most heinous sexual crime cases in the city.
The
55-year-old-director, who has three sons in the same age group as his
victims, was produced before the additional chief metropolitan court on
Friday and was remanded in judicial custody till August 5. He was taken to Cherlapally jail.
Before
producing him in the court, the sleuths took the accused to Osmania
General Hospital to check his medical fitness and then APFSL to conduct a
potency test. The seized a handycam with memory card in which the accused allegedly
recorded all the sleazy videos of the victims and a .32 pistol, with
which the accused had allegedly threatened the victim.
Police
have also recorded statements from a doctor of Hyderabad Nursing Home
near GHMC headquarters, to whom Ayub took the class XI student for
abortion. In her statement, the doctor reportedly told the police that
by the time Ayub brought the girl to hospital, her pregnancy had already
got terminated by pills. As a result, they merely provided treatment to
her. Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (16) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 38 |

If rumours are true, Azharuddin and Sangeeta are heading for
Splitsville
Sangeeta Bijlani and Mohammad Azharuddin
One more celebrity marriage is
heading for a split if the buzz is correct. Mohammad Azharuddin and
Sangeeta Bijlani are all set to go their separate ways in fact, news
is that the cricket baddie will be filing for a divorce within the next
week. The 14-year marriage has been rocked by a 26 year old Jwala
Gutta, World No 7 mixed doubles badminton player, who, its being
whispered, has caught Azhars eye. The fact that Jwala, an Arjuna awardee, is married to another badminton
champ, Chetan Anand, doesnt seem to have mattered to the 47-year-old
former India skipper and Congress MP from Moradabad.
Azhar was
earlier married to Naureen, and in almost a replay of what seems to be
happening now, he began to see Sangeeta, resulting in his eight-year-old
marriage ending in a messy and costly divorce. He has two sons from his
first wife. A source close to the couple says, Chetan and Jwala are
not staying together at the moment. Azhar is almost everyday seen with
Jwala these days. He has also gifted her a BMW.
Both Azhar and
Sangeeta refused to comment, but neither denied the imminent split
either. Jwala had, in an earlier interview, told us when asked about her
link-up with Azhar, I heard about it from friends. I could not help
but laugh over it. Azhar and I have known each other for the past eight
years. My family knows his entire family. You see, I am an outspoken
girl. If I had an affair with anyone, I would not hide it.
Meanwhile,
Azhars loyalists in Hyderabad say that the whole thing is an attempt
to keep him away from the Andhra Pradesh Badminton Association.
Jwala rebuts Azhar link-up
Jwala Gutta and Chetan Anand
Jwala Gutta, however, told DT that
she didnt even know if there was a rift between the couple. I have
not denied that I am good friends with Azharuddin. So I think I would
know if he were getting divorced. I had no clue about it, just got to
know it from you that he is filing for divorce. What irritates me is my
name being dragged into it. His personal life with his wife or his
speculated divorce has got nothing to do with me. I dont even know that
he is in Hyderabad, Im sure I would have known if he were here. Along
with Azhars personal life, even my personal life is being torn apart.
Yes, Chetan and I have not practiced together for two years or so, but
thats only because Chetan likes to practice with Arif Sir and I have to
practice with D Viju at Gopichands academy. There is no explanation
beyond this. Also, if Chetan and I dont stay together, its my personal
choice and when I think its the right time to talk about it, I will
come out in the open and talk. But that is not to say that Chetan and I
not staying together has got anything to do with Azhars personal life
or his speculated divorce.
When we contacted Chetan, Jwalas husband, he said, I really dont want
to talk or comment on this issue. I would like to talk about badminton,
nothing else. TNN
